Kindergarten
W.E.E. Kindergarten is a half-day class designed for children who have or will reach age 5 before August 31st of the year they enter the class.
Learning takes place in a developmentally appropriate environment with the goal of preparing the child for First Grade. The teachers guide and challenge each child to grow spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically. They strive to meet individual needs, because children vary greatly in their entering literacy levels and learning personalities. To meet these diverse needs, the teachers offer substantial one-to-one individualized instruction, supportive of each child’s learning personality.
Henderson County curriculum criterion is used as a guide to prepare children for First Grade in the county public schools. A balance of whole language and phonics is used to teach children to read and write. The “Four-Blocks” framework is utilized, and includes Guided Reading, Self-Selected Reading, Writing, and Working with Words. Because of the children’s different literacy levels, each “block” is taught in a multilevel manner, which provides additional support for children who need it and additional challenges for those who are ready.
The North Carolina Math Kit and Math Their Way curricula are used for kindergarten Math skills. Rays Readers are the basal reader curriculum. Kindergarten Month-by-Month and Morning Message are some of the curricula used in the writing program. Many theme related mini-books are used also for take home learning experiences. Kindergarten at First Baptist is: a “Garden of Children”, where a child develops a love for learning and an understanding of God’s love for them . . . a place where they are loved, safe and special!
